Contemporary Charleston 2010 at City Gallery – Charleston, Sc

The City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs presents Contemporary Charleston 2010, a Piccolo Spoleto Festival Exhibition at the City Gallery at Waterfront Park. The public is invited to the opening reception in honor of the artists, on May 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. Sponsored by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs, Contemporary Charleston 2010 was curated by Erin Glaze, gallery coordinator and artist Max Miller. Contemporary Charleston 2010 will be on display through July 3, 2010.

Contemporary Charleston 2010 features 10 local visual artists who are creating works specifically for the exhibit that have been inspired by the work of 10 local poets. The exhibit will also feature a documentary on the exhibit, from the meeting of the artists to the creation of the work, by the local filmmaker from Contemporary Charleston 2009, Austin Nelson. The visual artists and poet match-ups are as follows:

All the visual artists will hold lectures and demonstrations regarding their contribution to the exhibit on the following dates:

June 12: Kat Hastie and Lynne Riding
June 19: Hirona Matsuda and Julio Cotto
June 26: Timmy Pakron and Sarah Haynes
July 3: Max Miller and Ben Hollingsworth

The exhibit is open May 20 to July 3, 2010. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Noon to 5 p.m. During The Piccolo Spoleto Festival, the City Gallery at Waterfront Park is open special hours, Monday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The City Gallery at Waterfront Park, owned by the City of Charleston and operated by the City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs, is a venue for contemporary artwork that is new, vital and innovative, with a focus on broadening Charleston’s arts outlook. The City Gallery provides access to the visual arts for everyone in Charleston, S.C., visitors and residents alike, by offering exhibits that are all admission-free. MOJA Arts Festival in Charleston, SC 2009

It’s time again for the annual MOJA Arts Festival in Charleston. This is a celebration of African-American and Caribbean Arts. Nearly half of MOJA’s events are admission-free and the remainder are offered at very modest ticket prices. The upcoming festival is scheduled for September 24 – October 4, 2009.

The MOJA Arts Festival includes visual arts, classical music, dance, gospel, jazz, poetry, R&B music, storytelling, theatre, children’s activities, traditional crafts, ethnic food, and much, much more. In addition of a wide variety of presentations, MOJA also includes an educational outreach programs in the public schools and senior outreach in senior citizen homes.

Wednesday, Sept. 23 to Sunday, Sept. 27
•THEATRE – One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show, written by Don Evans, is Art Forms & Theatre Concepts, Inc. offering for this year’s festival. Memminger Auditorium, 56 Beaufain Street. Admission: Adults $20.00; Seniors/Students $15.00 with ID. September 24, 25 – 11:00am; September 26 – 3:00pm; September 27 – 7:00pm; September 23, 24, 26 – 8:00pm.

Saturday, Sept. 26
•“AN EVENING OF JAZZ UNDER THE STARS WITH LALAH HATHAWAY” National recording artist, LALAH HATHAWAY performs under the stars in a familiar romantic cabaret setting. The evening also features two of Charleston’s favorite artists–the Charlton Singleton Group and opening the evening with his usual dynamic performance style, violinist Daniel Davis. Sunday, Sept. 27
•A CLASSICAL ENCOUNTER – Duo recital by cellist, Kenneth Law, Professor of Cello at Converse College, Spartanburg, SC and pianist Stephen Buck performing works by  Faure, Piazzolla and Rubinstein, classical composers. City Gallery at Waterfront Park, 34 Prioleau Street. Admission: $10.00. 2:00pm-3:00pm.

Sunday, Sept. 27
•GOSPEL CONCERT – “A Back Home Gospel Hour” – MOJA presents Gospel Divas, Lynn-Marie Boone, Joy Pryor, and Gwendolyn Rodgers and the Men of Gospel, Rev. Randolph Miller, Anthony Burke and Mario Desassure in an old fashioned Back Home Gospel Hour. Joining the ensemble is Javetta Campbell with a special appearance by Minister Herbert Beard. Enjoy gospel music at its best. Trinity United Methodist Church, 273 Meeting Street. Admission: $10.00. 4:00pm.

Friday, Oct. 2
•DANCE – Ballethnic Dance Company from Atlanta, GA returns to MOJA to bring the magic of dance to the stage. Gaillard Municipal Auditorium, 77 Calhoun Street. Admission: $15.00. 7:30pm.

Saturday, Oct. 3
•R&B CONCERT – The MEHD Group presents the international recording artist, THE O’JAYS performing live on stage at the Family Circle Tennis Center.

Hosted by spoken wordsmith LaShanta Ase, Verbalicious will be held at the Arts Council of Beaufort County on Saturdays, July 12th and 26th at 7:00 p.m.

What is Spoken Word?
Poetry and Prose in Motion. “It is like watching someone perform a rhythmic monologue,” explained Ase. “But, an explanation of the noun ‘spoken word’, does it no justice. You have to experience it. It has a way of captivating an audience. The emotion and intensity that moves from speaker to listener can be quite profound.”

Barbara Hagerty is a Charleston native, essayist, and poet whose work has appeared in many national, regional, and local publications. The author of two books on the cultural meanings and metaphors inherent in the bags we carry, she has an M.A. in Creative writing from the The Johns Hopkins University. Amember of the Long Table Poets workshop, she is currently at work on a book-length volume of poetry.
