North African Jewelry and Photographs Exhibit – Savannah, GA

The Savannah College of Art and Design will feature approximately 80 rare pieces of North African jewelry and 27 late 19th- and early 20th-century photographs as part of the exhibition “Desert Jewels: North African Jewelry and Photography from the Xavier Guerrand-Hermès Collection” May 11-June 19 at the Pei Ling Chan Gallery, 322 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The exhibition is free and open to the public, and will be a signature part of the May 15 SCAD Style Gallery Hop.

Collected over three decades by Xavier Guerrand-Hermès, this work illuminates the diversity and beauty of traditional North African design. Crafted from silver, coral, amber and other semi-precious stones, the jewelry includes wedding necklaces, hair ornaments and fibula. Moroccan, Algerian and Egyptian jewelry show common threads of the Berber culture as well as local variations in materials and motifs.

In addition to the exquisite pieces of jewelry, “Desert Jewels” features the work of some of the most prominent European photographers of the era. Theses include Scotsman George Washington Wilson, the Neurdine brothers from France and Turkish photographer Pascal Sabah, all of whom visited North Africa to capture the magnificent landscapes and “exotic” people on film.

The exhibition is organized by the Museum for African Art, New York, and debuted in October 2008 at the National Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institution.

“Desert Jewels” is presented as part of SCAD Style, the Savannah College of Art and Design’s annual style and design series. SCAD Style events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Sand Arts Festival Winners 2009

On Friday, May 8, the annual Sand Arts Festival took place on Tybee Island, Georgia. About 300 SCAD students competed creating imaginative sand art on the north beach. Thousands of visitors came to watch.

SAVANNAH, Ga.—The Savannah College of Art and Design held its annual Sidewalk Arts Festival Saturday, April 25, in Forsyth Park. Thousands of visitors viewed temporary chalk masterpieces created on the walkways of the historic park, and more than 600 SCAD students competed for prizes. More than 135 SCAD alumni and 110 prospective students also participated in the competition.

Sand Art Festival 2009 – on the beach at Tybee Island, Georgia

Summer is almost here! There are many ways to enjoy the beach, and here is one. Come to the Sand Arts Festival. This competition can be a great inspiration to all sandcastle builders on the coast. Lots of SCAD students participate – so the creative sandcastles are well worth a trip. Bring your whole gang to Tybee Island for a day on the beach.

On Friday, May 8, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., the Sand Arts Festival will feature competitions in sand castle design, sand sculpture, sand relief and wind sculpture on Tybee Island, Ga. Contestants may work individually or in teams. Entries in the sand castle, sand sculpture and sand relief competitions are judged for creativity of concept and design, as well as excellence of craft and detail. Entries in the wind sculpture competition are evaluated according to structural development, surface decoration and ability to fly. SCAD faculty members judge all competitions.

SCAD Hosts Annual Sidewalk Arts and Sand Arts Festivals, Savannah, GA

SAVANNAH Ga. ­­– The Savannah College of Art and Design presents two popular annual arts festivals—the Sidewalk Arts Festival in Forsyth Park and the Sand Arts Festival on Tybee Island, Ga.

On Saturday, April 25, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., the Sidewalk Arts Festival will draw thousands of visitors to view temporary chalk masterpieces created on the sidewalks of the historic Forsyth Park, Savannah, Ga. First, second and third place monetary prizes are awarded in three categories: students, alumni and prospective students. Sidewalk Arts Festival participants represent SCAD’s many areas of study; different artistic styles are inspired by different cultures, interests and disciplines.

This year marks the university’s 30th anniversary, and to celebrate that milestone the Sidewalk Arts Festival will include the outdoor exhibition “30 Objects,” for which students and alumni submitted proposals for temporary interactive performance and/or sculptural exhibitions. All entries must incorporate 30 objects of the artist’s choosing and fit on a 48” round platform. Selected proposals receive a $2,000 prize and will be exhibited during the Sidewalk Art Festival.
