Brookgreen Gardens’ Spring Excursions – South Carolina

Explore the outdoors during Brookgreen Gardens’ spring schedule for creek cruises, Trekker excursions, The Oaks Plantation History and Nature Trail.

Cruise on a pontoon boat, The Springfield, along abandoned ricefields now home to alligators, waterfowl, and osprey as an interpreter helps visitors see the distinctive landscape of the rice plantations and understand the role of enslaved Africans in the cultivation of the rice crop. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children in addition to the garden admission.

Trekker Excursions – Travel back in time in a custom all terrain vehicle and discover the history of the four former rice plantations found at Brookgreen Gardens. There are two Trekker excursions offered – the Northern Trek- Laurel Hill Families and Fortunes – offered daily at 11 a.m. – 12 noon – 3 p.m. and the Southern Trek – The Oaks and the Alstons  offered daily at 2 p.m. Tickets are for each excursions are $7 for Adults; $4 for Children 6-12 in addition to regular garden admission.

The Oaks Plantation History and Nature Trail – daily  from 10:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. On this one-half mile, self-guided walking trail through the woods, visitors will see the archeological dig site of the plantation house foundations, the foundation of the spring house, and the historic Alston family cemetery.  The Trail brings to life an important element of history “off the beaten path”. Through interpretive panels along the natural half-mile walking trail, visitors learn about the culture of the individuals who lived at The Oaks Plantation during the rice-producing years. Transportation to The Oaks Plantation History and Nature Trail is provided by Brookgreen’s mini-bus. Tickets are $3 per person in addition to regular garden admission.
