Brookgreen Gardens’ New Otter Exhibit – River Basin Retreat – Now Open!

July 10, 2008 by Susanne Talentino

Murrells Inlet, SC- Two otters in the Lowcountry Zoo at Brookgreen Gardens have moved into their new home an 8,000 gallon above-ground pool made from clear acrylic panels called River Basin Retreat. Inside the approximately 1,200 square foot pool, replicas of smooth rock formations provide the otters with places to rest above the water and serve as “diving boards” when they jump into the pool. The best part of the River Basin Retreat is that it gives visitors to the Gardens an opportunity to see the otters up-close underwater and the chance to take some great photographs of these lively little creatures at play!

“The new otter exhibit is the first phase of Brookgreen’s new master plan for the Lowcountry Zoo, “ said Bob Jewell, President and CEO. “Eventually we will add exhibits for black bears, pumas, red wolves, bobcats, small mammals and reptiles. We would like to thank the Friends of Brookgreen Gardens for their support in funding this exciting new exhibit.”

Brookgreen Gardens is a non-profit corporation and a National Historic Landmark located on U.S. 17 between Myrtle Beach and Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Children 5 and under are admitted free; adult tickets (13-64) are $12; seniors (65 and over) are $10; children ages 6-12 are $5. Admission to Brookgreen is good for seven days. For more information, visit www.brookgreen.org or call 843-235-6000 or 1- (800) 849-1931.
