Sheep and Wool Days at Middleton Place
Experience the joys of sheep and the crafts made from their wool during Sheep and Wool days at Middleton Place. See sheep dogs herding and sheep being sheared and bathed. Artisans will be dyeing, spinning, weaving and knitting with wool. Adults may participate in a wine and sheep cheese tasting while children enjoy fun activities making crafts out of wool. Several groups of re-enactors dressed in 17th-century costume will demonstrate an array of living history programs portraying the lifeways of the colonists including the firing of blackpowder cannons and muskets, as well as cooking and other daily chores crucial to the colony’s survival. They will take place inside the palisade wall that protected the colonists during Charles Towne’s earliest days.
Since 2008 also marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of South Carolina State Parks, a ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. honoring the state park legacy.
Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site is located on Old Towne Road (S.C. 171), near exit 216-A off Interstate 26. Admission to the park is $5 for adults, $3.25 for South Carolina seniors, $3 for children ages 6 to 15 and free for children 5 and younger. A park passport that grants admission to all South Carolina state parks can also be purchased.

Fears that Fortified Charles Towne
– Cannon Demonstration
During the early years of the settlement, the Charles Towne colonists faced several threats, especially from their primary enemy and colonial rival, the Spanish. The Spanish fleet at St. Augustine, Florida was within three days travel of the fledgling English colony. Charles Towne, “here settled in the very chaps of the Spaniard,” was a direct challenge to the claim of this disputed land. Following a review of Charles Towne’s fortifications and defenses, the program will culminate with the Charles Towne Militia living history team’s demonstration of 17th century artillery.

The Youth Orchestra of the Lowcountry, also known as YoLow, and the College of Charleston Wind Ensemble will present a free concert on Sunday, April 6th at 4:00 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 405 King Street. Richard Marcus will conduct.
