Holiday Season in St Augustine, Florida

There is now better place to celebrate the holiday season than St. Augustine, Florida. The holiday decorated Old City makes it easy to get into the Christmas spirit and make holiday shopping a pleasure. The winter weather is usually very mild, and the old city puts on a great holiday celebration with the Night of Lights festivities, a Winter Wonderland, a Christmas Parade, Regatta and much more.

During the nearly 250 years when St. Augustine served as the capital of Spanish La Florida, the residents marked the holiday season with a single white candle burning in a window at each home. Today, the Nights of Lights continues that happy tradition in a grand style that reflects the city’s 446 years of history

The iconic Bridge of Lions will once again provide an incredible display of lights. For the past five years, the bridge has been dark during the Nights of Lights due to a complete renovation and re-construction. This year, the bridge and the two new parks will be a welcomed addition to the holiday season. Together they will add tens of thousands of lights to the spectacular lighting display in St Augustine.

LIGHT- UP! NIGHT

Nov. 19, 2011 

Past Mayors of the city of St. Augustine meet in the historic Plaza de la Constitucion to “flip the switch” to light up the Nights of Lights celebration on Nov 19, 2011. The festivities begin at 4:00 p.m. with spirited holiday performances in the Plaza’s Gazebo. Then at 6:30 p.m., all attending this festive event will be asked to participate in the countdown to the lighting.


MAYOR’S HOLIDAY LIGHTING GALA
Nov. 19, 2011

You can be a part of St. Augustine Mayor Holiday Lighting Gala. The fun begins with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at the Government House at 5:30pm. At 6:30 p.m., from the King’s Balcony, the Mayor will welcome the crowds in the Plaza de la Constitucion, for the Nights of Lights Lighting Ceremony. Following the Lighting Ceremony, the Mayor and Gala participants will be led by a 1740 Color Guard to the Courtyard of the historic Lightner Museum, located at 78 King Street, for dinner catered by Casa Monica Hotel, dancing to the music of The Committee and a silent auction. ST. AUGUSTINE MARATHON WEEKEND
Nov 19 & 20, 2011

This is the first year for the marathon which promises to be a recurring holiday event. Where else can you participate in a full marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K through the streets of the nation’s oldest city during the Nights of Lights. Winners will get to drink from the Grail of Endurance filled with fresh spring water from the world famous Fountain of Youth.   

 On Saturday there will be a 10K run at 7 a.m.; a Family 5K Run at 7:15 a.m.; and the St. Augustine’s Kids Race at 9:30 a.m. Then on Sunday at 6:05 a.m., the St. Augustine Full Marathon & Half Marathon wheelchair participant starts and at 6:15 a.m. the St. Augustine Full Marathon & Half Marathon starts. The Marathon course will be USATF certified. Each run take place at various locations between St. Augustine, St. Augustine Beach and Crescent Beach. HISTORIC WEAPON FIRING DEMONSTRATIONS AT CASTILLO DE SAN MARCOS

Have a blast at St. Augustine’s Castillo de San Marcos when authentically-clad re-enactors demonstrate how Spain’s famed artillerymen fired their cannons in the 1740’s. The cannons will roar at 10:30 & 11:30 a.m., 1:30, 2:30 & 3:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 11:00 a.m., 1:30, 2:30, & 3:30 p.m. on Sundays. Firing times are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Admission is $6; free for children under 16.

SUNSET/MOONRISE TOUR
Nov. 22, 2010 – Jan. 31, 2011 

Get the best view of St. Augustine from the top of the lighthouse and enjoy viewing the sunset and moonrise from the most unique perspective in all of St. Augustine! This special event includes a champagne toast, provided by San Sebastian Winery, atop the tower and an informative overview of the history of the St. Augustine Light Station. The tour takes place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the St. Augustine Lighthouse located at 81 Lighthouse Ave. in St. Augustine. The fee is $25 for non-museum members and $20 for members. WINTER WONDERLAND

Winter Wonderland comes with lots of activities for both young and old. This is the only place where you can experience snow and ice. Winter Wonderland features a real ice skating rink, ice slide, Elf Express train rides, The Elf Village, sleigh rides and even real SNOW! There are also scheduled visits from Santa.

ST JOHNS COUNTY FESTIVAL OF TREES AT WORLD GOLF VILLAGE

December 2 – 11, 2011
The St. Johns County Convention Center and Renaissance World Golf Village Resort will showcase trees and wreaths decorated and donated by local businesses, organizations, families and friends from the community. The display will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the final day. Admission is free. The trees and wreathes will be part of a silent auction and visitors will also be encouraged to fill out a ballot indicating the number of votes (in minimum $1 bids) they would like to cast for their favorites. THE GRANDE ILLUMINATION PARADE

March to the fifes and drums down the same St. Augustine streets marched through by British troops over 200 years ago. Then form up for the parade at 7:45 p.m. in front of Government House. The parade proper starts at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, December 3rd. Non-reenactors and other persons who wish to march along with the parade are invited to fall in behind the Civilians and Distaff. First Friday and Taste of the Arts – Charleston

Gallery Row is pleased to present two major events this October. The annual “Autumn Hues” show with opening receptions during The First Friday Art Walk and the French Quarter Gallery Association Fall Art Walk will take place on October 7, 2011. 

On the following evening, Saturday October 8, 2011,  from 6-8 pm, Gallery Row will host the annual event “Taste of the Arts on Gallery Row” produced by the Charleston Restaurant Association as part of the “Southern Living ® Taste of Charleston”. A spectacular selection of major new work by such important artists as Douglas Grier, Jean-Claude Gaugy, Albert Handell, Catherine Spencer, Hai Ou Hou, George Speck, Stephanie Schuler Hamlet, Victoria Platt Ellis, Bernie Horton and many more will be showcased at various galleries on Gallery Row.

Artists’ receptions are scheduled for Friday, October 7th from 5 pm to 7 pm, where collectors will have a chance to meet many of the participating artists. Additional artists will be on hand for demonstrations during the Taste of the Arts event on Saturday.

Autumn is the time of year when fine art seems to capture the imagination of Charleston, with no limit to the exceptional quality and diverse nature of subjects and genres being featured in the galleries. There are a great number of collectors, editors, museum curators and fine art enthusiasts in town for the festivities.

For the past few years we have been promoting fun things to do on the coast of South Carolina, Georgia and Northeast Florida – from Myrtle Beach to Daytona Beach. We publish a lot of information about upcoming events, festivals and happenings in different cities on the coast. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Coastal Companion has become an authority website when it comes to things to do in the coastal area. 

HOW TO BECOME A VENDOR

Many of the emails and phone calls we receive are about how to become a vendor at an event. We get a lot of questions about who to call, where to go, and how to sign up to sell at festivals and events. This is why we decided that it was time to do something about it.

We are launching a new page on our website  for those of you who are vendors or are looking to sell at festivals. You can find out under “About” on the navigation bar. It is called “selling at festivals“. 

On the page you will find the sign up form on the page. Sign up on our email list if you are interested in getting information about selling at festivals. We will start to send out a special newsletter to those of you who want to be vendors with information about upcoming events. This is going to be a great tool for you to find out about who is looking for vendors on the coast.

It is safe to say that festival season is in full swing, just look at our list of upcoming events. It won’t be difficult to find something fun to do, but it will be difficult to choose where to go.

With September comes a couple of music festivals, first out the inaugural Blues Festival at the Main Beach in Amelia, there’s another jazz festival in New Smyrna. Jacksonville also has a Beer Cup, while Daytona starts early with Oktoberfest. But there is a lot more happening on the coast. Just take a look at the list below.

 


Yoga in the Park – Metropolitan Park, Jacksonville

This inaugural event on Saturday, Sept. 10 from 8:00 am – 2 pm will feature world-renowned Guru Yogi Amrit Desai and Chandrakant John Heister. The group yoga session overlooking the St. John’s River will be followed by an enlightening speech by Yogi Desai. Founder’s Day Celebration – St Augustine, Fl

Witness the reenactment of the landing of St. Augustine’s founder, Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles, along the same shoreline where Spanish colonists came ashore in 1565. Following the reenactment of the Spanish settler’s arrival there will be a presentation about St. Augustine and America’s Spanish history, then a celebration of Mass at the Mission’s outdoor altar. After the Celebration of Mass, there will be informative presentations guest speakers. Following the formal ceremonies, Menendez and his men will lead a procession from the Mission grounds to the historic encampent at the Fountain of Youth Park.

Northeast Florida Beer Cup – Florida Theatre, Jax

This is the inaugural Northeast Florida Beer Cup, a new fundraiser featuring the region’s top craft brewers serving a variety of tasty ales, lagers, stouts and more. Plus there will be live music and we’ll be serving eats from favorite area pubs.

The event will be held at the Florida Theatre. The list of participating brewers and restaurants is growing, but here are those confirmed; Intuition Ale Works, Mojo #4, Engine 15, Sweetwater, Bold City, French Fry Heaven, River City Brewing Co., European Street, Hornsby’s Hard Cider, Green Room Brewing.

Amelia Island Blues Festival

The Inaugural Amelia Island Blues Festival includes two days of outstanding music great food, beer, wine and more, taking place at the Main Beach in Fernandina.

The all-star lineup features great blues artists such as Willie “Big Eyes” Smith, Albert Castiglia, Karl W. Davis, Sean Carney, Bill Sheffield, The David Gerald Band from Detroit, Michigan, Gainesville’s 6th St. Rhythm & Blues Review and South Florida’s Albert Castiglia. 

 

BeerFest – Daytona Beach, Fl

Daytona is celebrating Oktoberfest already in September with a craft beer festival with a special Oktoberfest theme.  The event will showcase craft beers and import beers and is held in the riverfront park across from McK’s Tavern. 

The Oktoberfest tent are will feature some of the best Oktoberfest style beers not only from Germany but from some of the best American breweries as well. There will be live German music by the world famous Swinging Bavarians and to top of the Oktoberfest theme there is even authentic German Style Food.

QuiltFest of Jacksonville

Quiltfest 2011 is the largest all-volunteer quilt show in the Southeast featuring over 400 quilts,Raffle Quilts from the 7 Sister Guilds, Quilt Sales, Silent Auction, Kids Corner, Free Demonstrations,Quilt Appraiser and Charity Corner. MOSH After Dark – Jacksonville, Fla.

Learn about the stars shining over Jacksonville while enjoying a live musical performance under the stars of the Bryan-Gooding Planetarium. The museum will open at 6 p.m. for guests to explore; a star show will take place in the planetarium at 7 p.m. immediately followed by a live musical performance; and rooftop stargazing and wine tasting will be from 8 to 9 p.m. Music Under the Stars is part of MOSH After Dark and is a collaboration between the MOSH and Friday Musicale.

Florida Heritage Book Festival – St Augustine, Fla

September 23 -24, 2011

The festival will feature a wide array of events and activities including workshops, readings, and book signings by popular authors. On Friday, writer’s workshops take place at the Casa Monica Hotel in historic St. Augustine, then the Literary Legends Awards Banquet takes place at the Renaissance Resort at World Golf Village. On Saturday, panel discussions take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ringhaver Student Center at Flagler College in downtown St. Augustine.
